So after visiting the RTA first up in Eden, we finally set off to Victoria. Unfortunately we were unable to get photos with the Canon Powershot as the road was not safe enough to pull up on next to the signs indicating our state change.
The drive down along the coast is really quite uneventful...pretty enough driving through all the trees, but not a lot of change. I was quite amazed at how we didn’t get to a large town until Lakes Entrance, especially since there are not very large towns along the length of the South Coast. Even Lakes Entrance is not especially large.
Very pretty, we hope to return to this area on our journey back home. Braidwood was the first large place we went through. We had decided to drive onto to Sale today. Stayed at the showgrounds. The first thing the kids said when we pulled up was “where is the playground?” I pointed to the oval – there it is, get out there.
So we had a play on the oval with the vortex and other balls.
Dinner tonight already done in the Dream Pot! Awesome!!!
Really foggy the next morning. Everything was damp and it was very chilli. Another big day driving today. We drove through Melbourne, around Geelong to Torquay. Beautiful day today when we arrived at Torquay. Nice and warm, made for a nice change from the cold days we have been having.
Found a great caravan park at Torquay right on the beach. We especially liked that they don’t charge for kids until they are 16. We have been quite shocked at how much places have wanted to charge us having the children with us. Tathra was going to be $80 a night! I mean really? For what? So $30 a night at Torquay was excellent!!!
Set up camp and went with Shane to Bells Beach. Well the beach just past it - Winkypop. Lachie, Luke and Emily had a fabulous time playing at the waters edge. I was happy to watch...the water temp too cold for me! Shane was having an awesome time out surfing! Yes we were quite happy to be at Torquay.
Well that lasted for a day!
Wednesday morning brought a cold snap. Lachie, Em and Shane had an early walk, then Shane off for a surf whilst I had the immense pleasure of schooling the boys...they weren’t too keen today and behaved accordingly! Lots of fun!!!
Explored Torquay in the arvo...found a fantastic playground on the foreshores. The kids went nuts!!! I froze!
We decided to treat ourselves to dinner tonight. Had pizza at a shop opposite the caravan park. The pizza was fantastic. Even more so because I didn’t have to cook it!
Torquay is really quite close to Geelong. We took a day trip on Thursday there. Geelong has a gorgeous waterfront and pier area. It was lovely walking around, even if it was super cold. We then drove over to Queenscliff to see the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. It is amazing that such a large Bay has such a small opening to the ocean, but I guess that is why it is such a great Port. We watched the ferries come and go and the kids found yet another playground to play at!
When we got back to Torquay we saddled the bikes and rode around to the foreshores park again. It is so easy to ride here as the land is quite flat. Very different from home.
Friday was a little warmer, only by about a degree, but the wind had dropped so it seemed a lot warmer. We graced the beach with our presence. All in all we had a pretty good day.
Packed up the van and departed on Saturday. The Great Ocean Road starts in Torquay, so we started our road trip along it to Princetown. What a beautiful drive. This section of The Great Ocean Road has a lot of twists and turns and a lot of hills, so it was a slow drive. Lorne is a gorgeous place and made for a great lunch stop. It has a fantastic foreshores park and playground area. Apollo Bay was also full of character.
Princetown is tiny. We stayed down at the camping reserve which is also the footy oval. Power and a campfire, a great spot and only 4kms from the 12 Apostles.
On Sunday we took about 4 hours to cover 10 kms. The 12 Apostles are gorgeous, so too is The Loch Ard Gorge. There are several different walking tracks to different viewing platforms. At Loch Ard Gorge you can walk down to the beach. It was lovely.
We drove onto Port Campbell and had a late lunch by the beach then drove back to Princetown. There was a new family there when we arrived. They are from the Central Coast and are also travelling around Australia.
