Still at Tuross Heads, nearly too wet too move on. Caught up on more school work, this has definitely been our greatest challenge. Took a drive to Mogo, quite a quaint little village on the Princes Highway. A lot of character here. We were looking forward to having a look around Mogo, but it was pouring with rain. We were quite happy to be wandering around in the rain having cabin fever, but the water was rising rapidly around us so decided to return to the van so we didn’t get stranded!
The view from our van was vastly different when we returned. The sand bar at the inlet was rapidly
washing away. Thankfully it didn’t look like it was going to threaten where we were camped, though we had a very light sleep with both Shane and I up several times though the night to watch the rising waters.
Poor Lachie had a sleepless night too with fevers and a tummy bug. I certainly recommend having a port-a-loo with you if travelling with kids!!! In a way Lachie’s illness came at a good time, because it was not favourable moving anywhere. There were a lot of regional road closures due to the heavy rains. Tuross was a good place to flood watch. We spent hours being entertained by things floating down the river, the water of which comes all the way from Cooma. Massive tree trunks were part of this. The highlight for the kid was spotting a dead cow on the banks opposite us! We couldn’t believe that some people were silly enough to be swimming in this water and to take toddlers in with them...no common sense!!!
Mid week and dry enough to move on...we were heading for Tathra but the caravan park there was going to set us back 80 dollars a night, having the children with us. Really this is ridiculous..... A lot of parks have gone silly with their pricing. So we moved on to cheaper pastures, and quite honestly, much more beautiful at Mystery Bay. This is a council run camp area with basic facilities, but the kids thought it was wonderful. We had our first camp fire here. Mystery Bay is close to Narooma which is quite a pretty place. Picked up our supplies her and got our voting out of the way.
Beautiful early morning photos at Mystery Bay. The Canon Powershot camera brings out the best in the scenery.
On to Bermagui this morning. Spent the morning having breakfast in town taking in the highlights of the town. Travelling can warp your sense of what is happening in the world, and this was highlighted here when we found out that the roads had only opened that morning to further down the coast.
Drove onto Merimbula were we found a great park for $33.90 a night...with the kids. This park catered so well for the children and was so much cheaper than Tathra. Decided to stay for a few nights so that Lachie could recoup as he still was not well. The NRMA/Big 4 Park is a paradise for children...great playgrounds, kids club, games room and heated pools.
On the Friday the kids burned through their pocket money at the games room! The kids club opened for free face painting and craft....excellent (especially the free part). Shane took off for a surf whilst the kids were kept entertained. The afternoon had plaster painting and the rest of the pocket money spent! Once all the money was gone we hopped on our bikes and rode down to Short Point which is at the end of the park. It was really beautiful at the headland here. Loved that the council had made wooden beach lounges on the headland to relax on!!! Free karaoke at the Kids Club that night rounded out a great day.
On Saturday we took a day trip to Eden just down the road. We went down to the wharf and looked at the big fishing boats and watched a large vessel from Singapore leave the wharf...we drove up to a look out and watched it leave Two Fold Bay. Went to the Killer Whale Museum. This was quite fascinating. Back in the whaling days, a pod of killer whales used to round up larger whales and drive them into the bay. There would alert the men who would launch the boats and kill the whale. The Killer whales were rewarded with the lips and the tongue of the kill to eat. Thi
s represented up to 4 tonnes worth of food!!!
We were going to take off on Sunday, but remembered that Shane needed to renew his Driver’s Licence, and that can only be done in NSW, so we had to stay till Monday. This worked out to be quite good anyway as Sunday was a gorgeous day so we spent the day swimming at the pools and just relaxing and soaking up the sun at the park.
