Help Wanted With Education Feature Trial

Jas_and_JemThe Great Aussie Road Trip would like your assistance in putting together our Education Pack for schools and pre-schools.  We are looking for families, teachers and schools to jump on board the Great Aussie Road Trip and share the journals with their children, classes, schools and families!

The aim of the Great Aussie Road Trip project is to inspire families to experience Australia and prove that there is more to family travel than “are we there yet?”  The Education Feature Trial is about exposing children to a country outside their backyard and sparking discussions that you wouldn't normally think the have with young children.

From 8th June 2010 the Power family will be on the road again.  Heading out to Lake Eyre to experience this rare event as the flood waters from QLD filter through the state, into South Australia, and fill (arguably) the world’s largest salt lake.  Currently the Lake is at 70% surface coverage and the migration of birds has begun.  We hope to travel out to the Lake, fly over, sail on and generally experience and share with our children the amazing natural wonderland that is Lake Eyre.

After Lake Eyre we travel to Arkaroola in the Northern Flinders Ranges. On our last trip to the Flinders, Jasmine spent hours "chipping" away at rocks determined to find her own fossil, perhaps this time!

From Arkaroola we travel to Menindee Lakes that on our last visit was sadly dry.  We are told now the life that has come back to the area after the floods across Australia and it is an amazing sight.

We are not 100% sure yet but we may head from Menindee Lakes to Lake Mungo for a change of pace.  On my first visit to Lake Mungo I found it had not had water for thousands of years but the adventure was amazing.  Massive sand dunes and incredible lunettes and sculpture like features rising from the sands. Home of Mungo Man and Mungo Woman, not to mention the rhino sized wombat!

We will be on the road for 3 weeks in all, sharing our adventures and passion for travelling our wonderful country.

During this trip we will be featuring a journal written by Jasmine our 7 year old (in Year 1), and entries by Jemma (5, Preschool) along with my own.  Each of these journals will highlight the individual experiences from a family perspective and the girls own perspectives.  They will also include their own photography, images taken by Jasmine and Jemma to show what they experienced rather than just text.

We hope to be using the National Library of Australia search tool, Trove, to assist us in teaching our children about why these locations are such incredible experiences and what has been found in the Flinders Ranges and Mungo areas. These links will be included in our journals.

Jasmine will also be sending postcards to classes who would like to be involved.  These cards will be printed with her photos and she will write her own experiences (in her own handwriting, which could be fun) on the back.  If you would like Jasmine to send you a postcard then make sure you email your details to Rachel on the Contact Us page!

We would love to have teachers, principals and schools on board for this trial in the hope that we can use our experiences to shape the knowledge of children similar ages to our girls (and Teddy as he grows).  We would also like to involve the families at home, offering them the chance to share more of our adventures in other locations with their children, and foster discussion as where they have travelled and what they have experienced as a family.  Our hope is to reach as many families as we can and show them the amazing benefits of travelling as a family and experiencing Australia for themselves.

If you are interested in helping shape our Education Feature of the Great Aussie Road Trip project please email Rachel for details and to register, you can find my email address on the Contact Us page.

We are interested in gathering as much feedback from teachers, schools and parents to help refine our education feature – we want to know what we can provide to assist in your teaching and the children’s learning.
