Cape Leveque and surrounds

Having driven the 200km along a red sand road around 10 years ago to Cape Leveque, I was interested to see if it had changed - apart from the addition of 100k of sealed surface it hasn't and it is still one of my very favourite places in Australia.

Eighty Mile Beach - fishing paradise

Eighty Mile Beach is famed in 'nomad' circles, if there was one place that everyone said we had to visit this is it! Essentially just a caravan park and shop on the foreshore of a long, long sandy beach on which you can drive, fish and collect shells.

Pardoo Station - station stay on the coast

Well, we weren't headed to Pardoo Station either, we were heading straight to Eighty Mile Beach, but a local we talked to in Tom Price said it had a great variety of fishing, so we stopped to check it out.

Undecided how long we'd stay we talked to a few fishermen on arrival, those with boats (tinnies) and those without. We were assured the tides were about to 'come good' and that there was indeed a huge variety of fishing options, so we booked in for the week.

Karajini National Park - Jewel of the Pilbara

Another place we weren't going to go, but so many travellers said we should that we did. And we are glad we did! Karajini National Park is the epitome of the Pilbara, red dirt and towering red cliffs from the gorge floors, with beautiful clear pools along the bottom.

Tom Price - industry meets tourism

We picked up our van in Onslow, refuelled, got a few goodies for the cartrip and headed off on a 450km journey east to Tom Price.

Misreading the map and with an incredibily strong headwind, our range was reduced to 300km, and the nearest fuel was 360km at Parabadoo - oops. We stopped at a roadside parking area and bought 10 litres of fuel from some travellers heading the other way, but decided we still would be short, so we stopped again and emptied the boat petrol tank into the car.
