Quobba Station

high_cliffWe headed north to Carnarvon which is home of the mile-long jetty and the OTC satellite dish. A great spot to pick up fuel, water and food. We went to the Saturday markets at the visitor centre and then headed out of town.

quobba_stationThere are a few different camp spots near the Blowholes (great for snorkelling), including Quobba Point, Quobba Station and further up (60km's of dirt) at Red Bluff. We checked out Quobba Point, but it was very busy and the facilities filthy, so we headed to Quobba Station which has a lovely new amenities block with solar showers.

All water at this point is bore water, hence filling up our tanks in Carnarvon. The bore water is incredibly hot, salty and not suitable for drinking at all. Quobba Station has limited power on a generator, but not enough for even our kettle to work, so we worked off 12 volt instead.

sunset_at_high_cliffThe coastline here has some great rock fishing, and quite a few people have been killed by being swept of the coast by 'killer waves' - a sign warns to watch out for this in huge, bold letters. We decided to have a go at fishing at High Cliff, which has security ropes and a fence as well as a life buoy. Definitely not a suitable place to take children!

shell_deposits_homestead_beachThe beach at Quobba Station is called Homestead beach, it is rocky, rough and full of oysters, so not suitable for swimming, fishing, or anything much but walking and looking at the large clam shells that have washed up on the beach.

A drive down to Red Bluff took us along about 50km of good dirt road, but the last 10km's was teeth chattering. There are camping facilities here as well (but no power), right on the beach, and Guy declared the toilets the best long-drops he's found for lack of smell.

fishing_red_bluffWe walked out along the Bluff and did some fishing, with a windy day it wasn't suitable for swimming or snorkelling, but you can do that here too. We saw quite a few surfers off the point as well - game!

We had a light lunch at the delightful little cafe at Red Bluff which is run by a lovely woman who's been there 15 years and has 8 children from 18 down to 4 years - many of them born on the station. Talk about outback life, this place is seriously remote!

We headed back into Carnarvon on the Monday and located an auto-electrician to do some work on our breaks, and attempted to catch up with a school friend of Guy's who lives and works in Carnarvon (we discovered that her sister is at Quobba Station too). Refueling and filling with water again, we started our trek to Coral Bay.
